Bone Grafting

When a tooth is lost, the jawbone underneath starts to shrink over time. If too much bone is gone, there may not be enough left to support a dental implant. Bone grafting rebuilds that foundation so implant placement can succeed.

Bone Grafting

How It Works

Dr. Lee places bone material into the area where loss has occurred. The material can be synthetic, donor-sourced, or from another area of your own body depending on the situation. Over the following months, your body gradually replaces the graft with new natural bone.

Full integration typically takes 3 to 6 months. Once the graft has healed and the bone is strong enough, the site is ready for implant placement.

In some cases, a bone graft can be done at the same time as a tooth extraction to preserve the socket for a future implant. That saves you time and an extra procedure.

What to Expect After

The procedure is done under local anesthesia. Post-operative discomfort is typically mild to moderate and manageable with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Most patients are back to normal activities within a few days.

During the healing period, we monitor progress with periodic checkups and X-rays. Dr. Lee lets you know when the graft has fully integrated and you're ready for the next step.

The procedure itself is painless with local anesthesia. Afterward, some swelling and soreness for a few days is normal. Most patients handle it fine with over-the-counter medication.

Not always. Patients with adequate bone density can often go straight to implant placement. Dr. Lee evaluates your bone structure during your implant consultation and lets you know if grafting is necessary.

Typically 3 to 6 months, depending on the size and location of the graft. Your body needs time to grow new bone around the graft material. We track healing closely and move to the implant as soon as the site is ready.
