Dental Anxiety: How to Overcome Your Fear of the Dentist

If the thought of sitting in a dental chair makes your heart race, you're in good company. Over a third of adults deal with some level of dental anxiety. Here's how we help, and why the things keeping you away are more manageable than you think.

About 36% of adults experience dental anxiety, and roughly 12% have fear severe enough to avoid the dentist entirely. If you fall anywhere on that spectrum, the first thing to know is there is zero judgment here.

Many of our patients at Aspire came to us specifically because they were afraid. Some hadn't been to a dentist in 5, 10, even 15 years. Every single one of them said the same thing after their first visit: it wasn't nearly as bad as they expected.

What's Really Keeping You Away

Fear of the dentist is the obvious answer, but when you break it down, it's usually something more specific.

No insurance. You assume you can't afford it, so you don't go. We work with patients who don't have insurance all the time. We offer financing options and will always be upfront about costs before any treatment happens. Not having insurance is never a reason to skip care.

Embarrassment. You haven't been in years and you're worried about what we'll find or what we'll think. Our office is judgment-free. We've seen it all, and our only concern is helping you get healthy. Walk in with your head up. You're doing the right thing by showing up.

Nothing hurts. If your teeth feel fine, it's easy to convince yourself you don't need to go. But many dental problems, including cavities, gum disease, and even oral cancer, develop without pain in the early stages. Regular checkups catch things before they become painful and expensive.

Past bad experiences. A rough visit years ago can stick with you. We get that. Our approach is built around communication, gentleness, and going at your pace. This is a different experience.

How We Help Anxious Patients

Dr. Lee and our team take extra care with patients who are nervous. Here's what that looks like in practice.

We explain everything before we do it. No surprises. You know what's happening at every step, and you can ask us to pause at any time.

We offer nitrous oxide for patients who need extra help relaxing. It's safe, effective, and wears off within minutes after your appointment.

We work at your pace. If you need to start with just an exam and a conversation, no cleaning, no X-rays, that's perfectly fine. Building trust comes first.

We use a gentle touch. Our hygienists are thorough without being aggressive, and Dr. Lee is careful and patient with numbing and procedures.

The hardest part is making the call. After that, we take it from there.
